“See me walkin. Why? Cause I don’t run fam. Make a film about me, find a proper fuckin stuntman.” That line was my first introduction to Ocean Wisdom, as I’m sure many others too. ‘Walking’, features the young MC showcasing an astounding talent for rhyming and wordplay over the raw, bass-filled Dirty Dike production. Following that was “Splitting the Racket”, in which he kicked up the speed of his raps to an almost intimidating pace, still maintaining clarity and displaying a variety of flows throughout, automatically assuring me that Ocean Wisdom was definitely someone to keep an eye on. Signed with High Focus Records, he is set to release his debut album, ‘Chaos 93’ solely produced by Dirty Dike, on February 22nd. The future is incredibly bright for Wizzy and we had a chat with Ocean about his origins, new album and much more.
When did you start rapping?
What is your earliest memory of music?
“Listening to reggae and hip hop with my parents.”
How did you hook up with High Focus?
“A friend of mind brought me to Dirty Dike’s house one time. He played a beat, I rapped on it and that ended up being ‘Walking’. We carried on making tunes together from there”.
Has your fast growth as an artist been surreal?
“Yeah man, it’s been surreal. I’ve been working hard so I haven’t had the time to appreciate it, but it’s surreal when I stop and think about it”.
What should we expect from ‘Chaos 93’?
“It’s gonna be an interesting journey for the listener. It’s got lots of different things to it and it’s pretty varied.”
How long did it take to make?
“4 to 5 years. Most of the album is more recent but some of the stuff on there is older”.
What do you look for when choosing beats?
“Just something to catch a vibe off really. If I hear something, I’ve already lodged it away with whether I want to work with it or not. One of the main things that took a while to develop was learning which beats to get on and which to leave.”
Who are your main sources of inspiration?
“Dizzee Rascal, Skepta, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray; she’s a bad girl. I’m in to lots of stuff. I like Jimi Hendrix, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott.”
The production quality on your music videos is very high. Do you think that visuals are as important as the music these days?
“Not as important as the music, but I definitely take it seriously. The visual is just a little seasoning. That being said, obviously you’ve got to season it right.”
How would you describe your music for someone who hasn’t heard it?
Do you have plans to tour after the album?
“I’m doing a European tour that starts the 24th of February. Then I’m doing a U.K tour and I’m trying to sort Australia and U.S tours.”
If you could work with one artist, who would be?
“Dizzee. C’mon man. Dizzee Rascal”.
